Getting the Most of Your Herbs

Basic Herb Care

Light: Full sun for 5 to 8 hours daily.

Fertilize: Feed your herbs heavily to promote new growth and prevent them from going to seed.

Prune: Regularly pinch back your herbs to keep the plant full and lush. You want to encourage new growth and prevent flowers from forming.

Flowering: When herbs flower, the flavor of their leaves and stems changes. For example, cilantro changes to coriander when it flowers!

Where to Plant your Herb Garden

Whether herbs are part of your vegetable garden or planted in containers on your deck or patio, their great flavor is only a few snips away.

Container Gardens

  • Herbs grow well in containers outside on your patio or porch!
  • Don’t limit yourself on what containers to plant in! Fun ideas include strawberry planters, clay pots, hanging baskets or coco-lined window boxes. Just make sure your planters have drainage holes!

Give your herbs space to grow!
Your herb plants will grow bigger and fuller when you give their roots room to expand! Avoid planters that are small as herbs have aggressive root systems.

Size Recommendation:

  • 6″ Planter can hold 1 herb
  • 8″ Planter can hold 2 herbs
  • 10″ Planter can hold 3 herbs
  • 12″ planter can hold 4 herbs

Soil for Planters:
Use well-draining soil that is high in nutrient value!

In Your Garden Beds

Amend your soil
Herbs grow best in enriched, well-draining soil. We recommend amending your soil with topsoil soil and organic, nutrient-high sweet peat.

Space your herb plants
Give your herbs room to grow! It is best to space your herbs out 8-10″ from root ball to root ball. For example: Basil can grow over 8″ wide and 18″ tall!

PRO TIP: Do not plant mint in the ground! It is invasive and it will take over your flower bed.

Protect from rabbits
Soft herbs like basil and parsley are a treat for rabbits! Protect them by planting rabbit-resistant herbs on all sides of them. Rabbits dislike chives, rosemary, thyme, mint, sage and more.
